| Two year old Western Pleasure debut.... After having his legs checked, Quagga
trained with reining trainer, Tom Hoyt for western pleasure. Tom always
commented that Quagga was a pleasure to be with and a fast
learner. Quagga and Tom went on to be the team to beat
that year in the Syracuse, NY area in two-year-old western pleasure,
receiving an invitation for the 1996 World Show.
Three year old season - not as
planned.... A rerun was planned for his three-year-old season
with Tom and Quagga being reunited again. However, an illness struck the show barn
forcing me to bring Quagga home before he
could defend his title. He rested the entire season.
Four year old season - the end of a
Dream... The original reason for
choosing Tom as Quagga's trainer was because I saw what Tom
quickly recognized in Quagga as a two year old: his reining
ability was natural. Reining was to be where Quagga made his mark. Unfortunately, this opportunity was not to
be Quagga's. A breeding injury brought his days under saddle to a
close.
The
years that followed... Quagga has sired over 25 colored
foals with a variety of patterns and spot sizes, with more
Quagga Kids expected this year. The
Quagga Kids can be found as far north as Canada, all the way down to
Texas. As for Quagga, he now
enjoys the quiet life, but still makes appearances at the EAA
Show (Empire Appaloosa Assn.) in Syracuse,
NY in
August.
The versatility I first saw in Quagga, I
now see in his kids; the Quagga Kids.
Check them out or stop by and see for yourself!
Forever the showman, Quagga is modeling his beaded Appaloosa Heritage
halter, created by Penny Whitehead of Penbo's Flying W Appaloosas.
